Frugal food shopping for the Anglo Israeli

11/11- China’s Singles’ Day means great shopping deals for us!

11/11- the four ones that look like individual people- is also known as Singles’ Day in China.  On this anti-Valentine’s Day, retailers thought that since you aren’t out celebrating with your beau, you might as well do some shopping to lift your mood.  The concept has expanded greatly to become China’s largest online shopping day of the year, bringing in $5.75 billion in online sales in that 24 hour period last year.  Buoyed by their success, other countries have latched on to the concept.  This year Israel will be participating as well but for two days- 11/11 and 12/11.  Although there aren’t many details yet, you can go to Shopping IL’s web site to see a list of stores that are participating.  Of course, the Chinese web site Aliexpress will be participating (and has free delivery to Israel).

JDate and Chinabuy will be joining forces to have a singles party the evening of 11/11 to celebrate all those great deals everybody got that day.  More details on their Facebook page.  Chinabuy also offers free shipping to Israel.

Although I am sparse on details right now, I will be looking for information next week so be alert for great sales next Tuesday.

How Israelis are beating the high cost of living

Did you catch the Times of Israel blog post by Kenny Sahr?

If not, I wanted to bring to your attention the three places he recommends for online shopping:

1. Deal Extreme– this is the mecca for cheap (I really mean cheap) non-name versions of all electronics and accessories.  If you don’t care if it is not a brand name, or is a copy of a brand name, and you want low prices with free shipping to Israel, check it out.  I am more of a high-quality long-lasting purchase kind of person, especially after my experience with defective $1 iPhone USB cables, but to each his own.  They are insanely popular among Israelis.

2. Book Depository– This site has a huge selection of English books and shipping is free to Israel.  The prices area few (i.e. 3-5) dollars more than Amazon, and they don’t have used books, but otherwise they have excellent quality and relatively fast shipping.  I love this site.

3. Alibaba– Another Chinese warehousing site- some of which ships free to Israel.  You can buy everything from rice to machinery to toys to clothing to furniture.  I don’t know what passes through customs and what doesn’t and according to Kenny not all items have free shipping to Israel.  I have never purchased anything here.

Purim costumes without the stress

If you are like me, you dread facing the crowds of pushy parents trying to get the best costume for their kids for Purim.  By the time you finally find the costumes they like, it is the wrong size, ripped, or otherwise unusable, and then the tantrums begin.

This year, you can shop for costumes in the comfort of your own home on the Tilboshet web site.  They have everything from Angry Birds to Achashverosh and from clowns to Queen Esther.  Shipping is free.  You must order by 1 Feb and delivery takes 21 days (Erev Purim is March 15).  Prices range from 50 shekels to 119 shekels, with most between 79-99 shekels.

If you are looking for some ideas for birthday presents, they also have my favorite FoxMind games such as Rat-a-tat-cat (חתתול), Sleeping Queens (חלומות), Spot It (דאבל), and Jungle Speed (ג’ונגל ספיד).
